Become a Volunteer

If you want to make a difference in your community, earn the respect of your neighbors, and join a team of men and women who forge lifetime bonds through courageous volunteerism, we encourage you to contact us below so we can get you started. We provide volunteers with the highest quality training available to provide South Kingstown with the best-trained firefighters and emergency responders.

Online Volunteer Application

Steps to join our department:

  1. Complete the online application
  2. We will find the UFD station that best fits you
  3. The station members will contact you and let you know how to join them to learn about them
  4. You will begin your training!

We welcome young men and women who want to serve their community for as long as they want. Some stay a few years and others for decades. Many of our volunteers start with us and make a career in the fire service and the district provides members the option to prepare for a paid fire department. Some follow a medical path, others learn a lot of new skills and use them in their current or future jobs.

Joining the UFD means that you pick one of our 8 stations and become a member of that station. You can join a station based upon proximity to where you live, or if they specialize in something that you want to do like being on the ladder truck or the tanker. If you are not sure which one to pick, check out stations listed at the top of our website.

It takes a team to fight fires, but members have different responsibilities. It’s very important to be honest if you’re afraid of heights or have any other concerns. You will never be asked to do a task with which you are not comfortable.  There are many critical roles and we’ll help you find the one that’s right for you!

  • Junior Membership begins at age 16 with Full Membership beginning at age 18.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • We welcome volunteers from outside South Kingstown.
  • There are opportunities to volunteer on scheduled duty—day, night, and weekend shifts.
