What is a fire tax?
We are chartered by the State of Rhode Island to raise funds through taxation to provide fire coverage to the Town of South Kingstown. Since we are not a town department, your fire tax is separate and apart from your property tax bill.
Why do I have to pay fire taxes since it’s a volunteer service?
It takes a lot of dedication and time to be a volunteer firefighter. The fire taxes pay for the equipment, training, fuel, gear and everything else needed to provide fire service. It also pays for the office of the Fire Marshal, which completes safety inspections mandated by the State of Rhode Island.
When do you send out the fire tax bill?
The UFD bills for fire taxes once a year in late September. Tax payments are due in full October 31st.

Where can I go to pay my fire taxes?
Payments are accepted in the Business Office located at 131 Asa Pond Road. There is a drop box located outside the front door for your convenience.

We accept cash, check, or credit card (MasterCard or Visa).
I am only here in the summer; can I pay my taxes early?
Yes, you can prepay your fire taxes in most circumstances. Please call the office at 401-783-0617.
Will the mortgage company pay you out of my escrow account?
Unlike the Town, we do not know who you have your mortgage with. The annual fire tax bill is mailed to the owner of record. If you are escrowing for fire taxes, it is your responsibility to forward the bill to them.
